the greek theatre

Since 1890,  the Greek Theatre (‘Greeker’) has been part of the fabric of life at Bradfield. Over 1,800 pupils have taken part in plays and concerts held in its unique environment. The triennial Greek Plays were reviewed in the National and International press and served to spread far and wide the name of Bradfield College.

The last Greek play to be held in the open was Medea in 2006, and the modern requirements of Health and Safety dictated the closure of Greeker in 2009 – since which time it has lain dormant, awaiting a decision as to its future.

The Bradfield Foundation was incorporated in 1990 - The First 20 Years - Trustees of the Foundation have taken the unanimous view that a seminal point has been reached in the history of Bradfield – Greeker must either be saved (and saved quickly, as the rate of deterioration is alarmingly rapid), or consigned simply to being part of the history and archive of the College.

The vision for the future can be seen from the pictures on this page and via the DVD and brochure. The restored Greeker will not only serve to keep alive a totemic emblem of the school, but will also provide a unique and inspirational venue for current and future generations of pupils and staff to take forward the exciting and innovative Performing Arts initiatives that lie at the very heart of the modern Bradfield.

The Chairman of the Foundation has written to over 7,000 Old Bradfieldians and other previous donors asking them to donate towards the required sum of £1.3m. As with the recently completed Blackburn Science Centre, there is the opportunity for donors to sponsor certain aspects of the fabric of the theatre (from individual seats to the skene itself) and therefore to mark in perpetuity their contribution to the regeneration of this remarkable site.

Opportunities for donors and the Greek Theatre donation form can be found here.

For many, it is impossible to imagine Bradfield without Greeker – it is a case of “now or never” if we are to ensure that such an eventuality never arises. 2012 is a Greek Play year – it would be very fitting if that performance took place back where it belongs.
