big school
Big School’s complete renovation was undertaken in the summer of 2008. The false wall at the west end was removed, leaving the spiral staircase as a dramatic feature and exposing the original stained glass windows. The floor was entirely resurfaced and extensive new curtains were hung. It is now possible to hang curtains along the pillars on both sides of Big School from one end to the other and further curtaining can cross from one pillar to the other. This allows the maximum possible flexibility of staging.
A new lighting infrastructure and new lamps have been installed; this allows plays to be lit from any position in the hall. Since the renovation, six separate theatre performances have been staged with further ones planned. As well as restoring the building's magnificent original proporations, the work has allowed for a full theatre programme.
These renovations were financed from donations to the Performing Arts Appeal.
